Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk expressed his outrage at a question posed to manager Arne Slott regarding his future with the club, amid reports linking Xabi Alonso with the Anfield job.
The incident occurred during the pre-match press conference ahead of the Marseille game, when a journalist asked Slot whether Alonso, who had left Real Madrid, had contacted him about potentially succeeding him at Liverpool. The Dutch coach later described it as one of the “strangest” questions he had ever been asked in his career.
As a result, Liverpool FC decided to ban the journalist from asking any further questions. Van Dijk commented on this in remarks reported by the Liverpool Echo, stating that what happened was “a clear lack of respect”.
The Reds’ captain said: “Criticism is part of football and we are used to it. But what happened crossed the line, and it was the reason this journalist is not here today”.
He added: “We accept the criticism, especially given the results that have not met expectations compared to last season. But we must also consider the extent of the changes the team has undergone this summer, both in terms of players and tactical approach”.
Van Dijk pointed out that the current phase was difficult for everyone, players and coaching staff, but Slott dealt with it professionally, stressing that everyone within the team will be held accountable for the results, which motivates them to work continuously to correct mistakes.
He explained: “Losing points against Burnley was frustrating, especially with so many chances wasted, while the opponent scored from few opportunities, but that’s football”.
He concluded his remarks by emphasizing his optimism for the future, saying: “We all have to show the best version of Liverpool in the upcoming matches. I am optimistic and I enjoy being here. Difficult times will always be there; the most important thing is how you deal with them”.
