Rabat, Morocco – Algeria secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso in their Africa Cup of Nations match on Sunday evening.
The two teams met at Moulay Hassan Stadium, as part of the second round of group stage matches.
Riyad Mahrez scored the winning goal for the Algerian national team in the 22nd minute, from a penalty kick awarded to the “Desert Warriors”.
Just before the end of the first half, specifically in the fifth minute of stoppage time (45+5), the Algerian team missed a clear scoring opportunity. Goalkeeper Kouakou Koffi made a crucial save from Mohamed Amine Ammoura’s shot, which was saved when Ammoura found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper inside the penalty area.
In the second half, Algeria continued their attacking pressure. Ibrahim Maza missed another opportunity in the 69th minute, firing a shot from inside the penalty area, but goalkeeper Kouakou Koffi made a brilliant save.
The Algerian team dominated the second half, but failed to add any more goals, settling for a single victory.
With this result, Algeria topped Group E with 6 points, officially securing their qualification for the Round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations. Burkina Faso finished second with 3 points.
