Doha, Qatar – Portugal’s under-17 national team were crowned World Cup champions after defeating Austria 1-0 in the final match held today, Thursday.
Portugal met Austria at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar, in the final of the Under-17 World Cup.
Portugal’s Anício Cabral scored the winning goal in the 32nd minute of the first half. He met a low cross from Duarte Cunha on the right wing with a close-range shot that found the back of the net.
Portugal’s goal ignited Austria’s determination to get back into the game and score an equalizer. Daniel Frauscher unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area in the 85th minute, but the ball struck the right post and went wide.

Portugal secured their place in the FIFA U-17 World Cup final after a thrilling penalty shootout victory over Brazil (6-5) in the semi-final, following a goalless draw after extra time.
Meanwhile, Austria secured a place in the final after defeating Italy 2-0 in the other semi-final.
For the first time in the history of the tournament, 48 teams participated in this edition of the Under-17 World Cup.
This edition is also the first of five consecutive editions to be hosted by the State of Qatar until 2029.
Nigeria holds the record for most FIFA U-17 World Cup titles with five, followed by Brazil with four, and then Ghana and Mexico with two each.
