Cairo, Egypt – The Spanish national team swept aside their Georgian counterparts with four goals to nil, in the match that brought them together on Saturday evening, in the European qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
Georgia met Spain at the Boris Pechadze Dinamo Arena, in the penultimate round of the European qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring for Spain in the 11th minute from a penalty kick awarded after a Georgian player handled the ball inside the penalty area.
Meanwhile, Martin Zumbidi added the second goal for the Matadors in the 22nd minute, after a complete breakaway and then a shot that found the back of the net.
Ferran Torres completed Spain’s hat-trick in the 35th minute, ending the first half with his country leading 3-0.
In the second half, Mikel Oyarzabal strengthened Spain’s lead by scoring his second goal and his team’s fourth in the 63rd minute, securing three valuable points for the Matadors in the Group E standings.
The victory raised Spain’s tally to 15 points, putting them at the top of the group standings, but it was not enough to secure their qualification for the 2026 World Cup finals, while Georgia’s tally remained at 3 points in third place.
Spain and Georgia are in Group E, along with Türkiye and Bulgaria.
