Amid escalating military tensions and harsh security conditions in Iran, Netblocks, a website specializing in monitoring global internet traffic, announced on Sunday that the country had entered its 23rd day of complete disconnection from the global internet, while Iranian authorities completed 528 hours of total digital isolation.
The report issued by the website confirms that the Iranian government’s decision to impose this comprehensive embargo, which has now entered its fourth week, has turned the country into an “isolated island” from the rest of the world, exacerbating the accumulated crises that citizens are experiencing in light of the ongoing military conflict since February 28.
Data compiled by the website indicates that the continuation of this strict restriction has exacerbated the humanitarian suffering of millions of civilians. Beyond the economic damage that has paralyzed business and financial services, the internet blackout has deprived the population of access to independent sources of information, leaving them living in a state of confusion and uncertainty amidst ongoing airstrikes and security warnings.
International observers warn that isolating civilians from the outside world severely limits their ability to receive early warnings, communicate with relatives in affected areas, or document violations that may occur during military operations. The absence of a “digital window” means that Iranian citizens are left with only official narratives broadcast by state-run channels, at a time when the need for transparency and the free flow of information is ever-increasing.
This government measure comes amid Iranian authorities’ attempts to control the flow of news regarding battlefield losses, internal unrest, and developments in airstrikes targeting military and command centers in Tehran and other cities. While the government justifies this step on “national security grounds,” human rights experts argue that this prolonged blackout constitutes a violation of the fundamental human right to access information and further complicates the tragic humanitarian situation faced by the Iranian people under the weight of war.
