Washington, DC – WhatsApp, owned by Meta Inc., has announced a new optional feature that allows users to set a password for their accounts on both iOS and Android. This move is part of efforts to enhance digital security and reduce the risk of hacking. The feature is expected to be rolled out gradually over the coming period.
An additional layer of security after the verification code.
The new feature provides a second layer of protection, requiring users to enter their password after the initial six-digit verification code when logging in or recovering their account. This measure helps prevent unauthorized access. Even if the verification code is leaked or stolen, it enhances security and reduces attempts to take over accounts.
Password requirements and strength indicator
The feature requires users to create a password between 6 and 20 characters long, including at least one letter and one number. The app also provides a password strength indicator, aiming to encourage users to choose more complex and secure passwords.
Flexibility in management and modernization
The company emphasized that the feature is flexible, allowing users to update or delete their passwords at any time through the app’s settings. This gives them complete control over their desired level of security. This move is part of Meta’s growing commitment to strengthening cybersecurity across its applications, in light of the increasing number of digital threats and online fraud attempts targeting user accounts worldwide, particularly through instant messaging apps.
