Washington, DC – Amazon announced plans to lay off approximately 16,000 administrative and office workers. This marks the second major wave of job cuts in just three months, bringing the company’s total job losses to nearly 30,000. The move reflects the profound transformations underway in the technology sector as the adoption of artificial intelligence accelerates.
In an official blog post, Amazon’s Senior Vice President of Employee Experience and Technology, Beth Galetti, stated that the company is working to “enhance organizational efficiency by reducing management levels, expanding responsibilities, and eliminating bureaucratic obstacles.” She emphasized that these measures aim to make the company’s structure more agile and better equipped to adapt to the rapidly changing technology market.
Galetti clarified that these repeated layoffs are “not part of an ongoing plan.” However, she stressed that the company will continue to make necessary adjustments as needed. According to the statement, affected employees in the United States will be given up to 90 days to seek alternative employment opportunities within the company, in addition to receiving severance pay. According to the company’s figures, the total layoffs included approximately 14,000 employees last October. An additional 16,000 were added in the current wave, representing nearly 9% of the total administrative workforce, estimated at around 350,000 employees.
This move comes at a time when Amazon CEO Andy Jassey has confirmed that artificial intelligence will lead to radical changes in the nature of jobs. It will also contribute to reducing the need for some traditional tasks within large organizations.
Amazon, the largest private employer in the United States, is part of a broader wave sweeping the technology sector globally. In this context, major companies such as Meta, Pinterest, and Autodesk have announced similar plans to cut jobs. This is being done as part of redirecting investments and resources toward developing artificial intelligence and automation technologies. This comes amidst growing concerns about the impact of these shifts on the future of the job market.
Due to its reliance on artificial intelligence, Amazon is eliminating approximately 30,000 jobs in three months.
