Singapore – The Singapore government announced on Saturday an investment plan exceeding US$785 million to support artificial intelligence (AI) research until 2030. This initiative aims to enhance the country’s global competitiveness and address the challenges of limited human and natural resources by leveraging advanced technological solutions.

Josephine Teo, Singapore’s Minister for Digital and Information Development, stated that these investments will be directed towards establishing world-class research centers specializing in addressing complex strategic issues. The plan also supports the industrial applications of AI in vital sectors, contributing to increased productivity and fostering innovation.

Speaking at AI Research Week, the Minister added that the plan also focuses on developing local talent through international partnerships with leading academic and research institutions. This will ensure knowledge transfer and the development of a skilled workforce capable of keeping pace with the rapid advancements in the field.

Teo emphasized the government’s commitment to publicly disseminating the results of research supported by this program. This aims to contribute to global knowledge sharing and the exchange of expertise, highlighting Singapore’s ambition to establish itself as a trusted international hub for AI research and applications. This move comes as part of a broader national strategy aimed at integrating artificial intelligence (AI) across various economic and service sectors, leveraging it to address challenges related to resource scarcity and high production costs, as well as supporting sustainable digital transformation.

Observers believe that Singapore’s significant investment in AI research reflects its understanding of the importance of technology as a driver of future growth and its ability to play a pivotal role in shaping the global digital economy in the coming years.
