Beirut, Lebanon – Lebanese and Israeli officials held their first formal meeting Wednesday as part of the ceasefire monitoring committee, according to one of the participants.
The meeting took place at the headquarters of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in the town of Naqoura in southern Lebanon. This followed the Lebanese presidency’s announcement that former ambassador Simon Karam had been appointed to head the Lebanese delegation.
The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that an Israeli representative would be sent to meet with Lebanese officials. This was done within the framework of the committee, which until now had been limited to military representatives.
