Tehran, Iran – The Iranian Chamber of Trade Unions has issued a directive imposing a complete ban on the sale of any goods or the organization of any Halloween-related
celebrations in all public places and trade union institutions.
Noting that the aim of this decision is to protect the country’s cultural, religious and social affairs.
Closing the violating unit
The directive, published on the eve of Halloween celebrations,
is specifically directed at managers and supervisors of cafes,
restaurants, and catering establishments.
The Chamber confirmed that the police supervising public places
will take strict legal measures against any violation.
Including closing the violating unit and referring the operator to the competent authorities,
Holding the unit head directly responsible for any violations.
This directive is part of an ongoing policy of social repression of Halloween celebrations in Iran.
Rejecting Western festive culture
In 2021, five cafes and restaurants in Shiraz were closed for holding similar events,
A number of people were referred to judicial authorities, according to Fars News Agency.
As Majid Emami, Secretary General of the General Culture Council, stated in July 2023,
That Halloween and Valentine’s Day represent elements of boring Western society,
In reference to the authorities’ rejection of Western festive culture.
The Halloween merchandise market is booming.
Despite the official ban, reports indicate a boom in the market for Halloween-related goods in Iran.
Especially among young people in big cities,
Reflecting the contradiction between official legislation and societal trends.
