Abu Dhabi, UAE – Axios, citing a senior US official, reported that several US Navy ships transited the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, the first such operation since the start of the war. The warships sailed from east to west into the Persian Gulf before turning east again through the strait into the Arabian Sea, a move that was not coordinated with Iran.
Freedom of navigation is central to the operation.
The US official confirmed that the passage of the ships was intended to ensure freedom of navigation through international waters. He added that this step comes within the framework of enhancing maritime security and protecting global trade routes.
Statements by the US President
In the same vein, US President Donald Trump downplayed the tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, stating that it would be open “in the not-too-distant future.” He also said that markets were beginning to recognize the existence of alternative routes to transiting the strait. Trump added that he would soon reveal whether Iran was acting in good faith, describing Iran as a “failed state.”
Energy and oil supplies
Trump pointed to the abundance of oil and gas in the United States, asserting that several tankers were en route to American shores to load supplies. This, he argued, demonstrated his country’s ability to secure global energy markets despite regional tensions.
