Washington, DC – Sources told Axios that the Lebanese government and the US administration have requested a temporary ceasefire from Israel. This move is seen as a preliminary step to create a more conducive atmosphere before anticipated direct negotiations between the two sides.
According to the sources, the request includes a “truce” or a limited halt to Israeli military strikes against Hezbollah. This step is presented as a “goodwill gesture” to help facilitate the success of the talks expected in the coming days.
Reports indicate that Lebanon submitted this request through US mediation. Washington has also endorsed the proposal and urged Tel Aviv to respond positively in order to de-escalate tensions and pave the way for diplomatic solutions.
These developments come amid escalating military tensions on the Lebanese border. The continued fighting poses a major obstacle to any negotiation process, especially given the crisis’s overlap with broader negotiations between the United States and Iran.
Meanwhile, Israel has yet to issue a final decision regarding its response to the ceasefire request. This comes amidst assertions that any ceasefire must be part of broader arrangements concerning security and political understandings in the region.
Intensive diplomatic efforts are expected in the coming period. These efforts aim to contain the escalation and prevent the situation from spiraling into a wider confrontation in the Middle East.
