Europe – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called on Tuesday for an immediate and comprehensive cessation of hostilities in the Middle East. She stressed the urgent need for action to prevent further escalation, which threatens global economic stability and energy security. Von der Leyen made her remarks during a joint press conference in Canberra, Australia, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. She described the current situation as “extremely delicate,” particularly regarding its direct impact on global energy supply chains.
Von der Leyen explained that the escalating tensions in the Middle East are no longer confined to the regional sphere. They have extended to cast a heavy shadow on international economies. She stated, “We are all feeling the repercussions of fluctuating gas and oil prices, which directly affect the continuity of our businesses and the well-being of our societies.” The President of the European Commission emphasized that the only way out of this crisis lies in prioritizing dialogue and diplomacy. She stressed the necessity of “reaching a negotiated solution that puts an end to the hostilities we are witnessing in the Middle East.”
Von der Leyen’s call comes at a time of growing international concern that the ongoing conflict could disrupt vital shipping lanes and exacerbate the global energy crisis. This has prompted the European Union to intensify its diplomatic efforts with international partners, including Australia. These efforts aim to urge all parties involved to exercise restraint and return to the negotiating table, in order to avert potentially dire economic and political consequences for the region and the world should the current escalation continue.
