Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – In a firm diplomatic move reflecting the gravity of the regional situation, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Iranian ambassador to the Kingdom, Ali Reza Enayati, on Sunday. This came in response to the blatant Iranian attacks targeting Saudi territory and several other Arab states. This military escalation is unprecedented in the region.
Unequivocal condemnation and rejection of the violation of sovereignty
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in an official statement that Deputy Foreign Minister Waleed bin Abdulkarim Al-Khuraiji met with the Iranian ambassador and conveyed to him the Kingdom’s strong condemnation and denunciation of these attacks targeting the security of the Kingdom and the Gulf states. Al-Khuraiji also emphasized the Kingdom’s categorical rejection of any violation of state sovereignty. He affirmed that these aggressive actions undermine regional security and stability efforts and push the region toward a dark tunnel of chaos. During the meeting, the Saudi official stressed that the Kingdom will not stand idly by in the face of these threats. He also emphasized that it “will take all necessary measures to defend its security and protect its territory and citizens,” in accordance with the right to self-defense guaranteed by international laws and conventions.
Explosions heard in eastern Riyadh
This diplomatic move comes hours after a tense night in the capital. Local residents and journalists reported hearing loud explosions in eastern Riyadh. Plumes of smoke were also seen rising from various locations east of the city. Initial reports indicate that these were the result of air defenses intercepting hostile aerial targets. Meanwhile, the region is experiencing a wave of Iranian strikes targeting cities and facilities in several Gulf states. This appears to be a random act of retaliation by Tehran for the coordinated US-Israeli attack that targeted key Iranian leadership positions on Saturday.
Regional repercussions
Observers believe that summoning the Iranian ambassador sends a clear political message that Riyadh will not allow its territory to become an arena for settling scores. The de-escalation process, for which significant diplomatic efforts have been made, is now threatened with complete collapse. These developments coincide with a large-scale military buildup in the region. These events are unfolding amidst international calls to protect global energy supplies and international shipping lanes from the dangers of this perilous military escalation.
