London, UK – The British government announced on Friday the temporary withdrawal of its staff from Iran and the closure of its embassy in Tehran, citing the rapidly evolving security situation in the region. It confirmed that the decision was a precautionary measure to protect its diplomatic personnel.
The British Foreign Office said in a statement that the British Embassy in Tehran had been temporarily closed and that operations would now be conducted remotely. It noted that its ability to provide support to British nationals inside Iran had become “very limited.”
Decline in consular services
The Foreign Office explained that direct consular services, including emergency services, will not be available at this time. It urged British citizens to follow official updates and take necessary precautions.
Escalating regional tensions
The British decision comes amid escalating tensions surrounding the Iranian nuclear program. US President Donald Trump outlined his rationale for a potential military strike against Iran during his State of the Union address. He affirmed his preference for a diplomatic solution but stressed that Tehran would not be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon.
Simultaneous Western moves
The British move reflects growing concern in Western capitals about developments in the Middle East security landscape, particularly given the ongoing indirect talks between Washington and Tehran, accompanied by mutual threats and military movements in the region.
This step comes within the context of a broader review of precautionary measures being taken by several countries regarding their diplomatic missions. It also comes amid anticipation of the outcome of the diplomatic process in the coming days.
