Washington, USA – In a remarkable development that further complicates the tense situation between Washington and Tehran, a new report was issued by the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD). Moreover, it was published by the American network “Fox News” and revealed serious allegations.
The allegations concern the possibility of Iranian authorities using chemical materials against demonstrators during the protests that erupted last January.
Accusations of violations and calls for an international investigation
The report, which sent shockwaves through political circles and generated significant headlines, explicitly calls on the United States,
and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to launch an immediate and comprehensive international investigation into these allegations.
Additionally, the report’s author argues that policymakers in Washington have become overly focused on the details of Iran’s nuclear program.
As a result, they overlook other, equally serious, dimensions: Iran’s potential chemical weapons arsenal and its use in internal repression.
Reactions: Between “psychological warfare” and political pressure
Iran is a signatory to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). Thus, any confirmed use of such materials is not merely a human rights violation,
but a grave breach of international obligations and international law.
The report asserts that remaining silent in the face of these indications could embolden Tehran. Furthermore, this could prompt Tehran to further employ unconventional methods to suppress civil unrest.
For its part, Tehran has previously denied similar accusations.
They describe them as part of a “psychological war” waged by Western intelligence agencies to undermine its negotiating position.
This is particularly relevant given the timing of these reports with the sensitive rounds of negotiations in Geneva.
