Tehran, Iran – In his first public comments on Western reports alleging he orchestrated a coup attempt against Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, former Iranian President Hassan Rouhani broke his silence.
He described the allegations as “fabricated lies targeting the unity of the Iranian state.”
In a brief statement, Rouhani said, “Raising such claims at this sensitive time only serves the enemies of Iran.”
He added that political disagreements within the country “are managed within the framework of the constitution and the institutions of the system, not through chaos or coups.”
Western reports…and internal questions
Western media outlets had reported internal movements linked to a power struggle within the Iranian political establishment. This came amid escalating regional tensions and international pressure. However, circles close to Rouhani dismissed these reports as “an attempt to ignite baseless internal disputes.”
Delicate timing
The controversy comes at a time of escalating tensions in Iran on several fronts, including the nuclear issue and economic pressures.
Therefore, any talk of internal divisions is causing widespread concern among the Iranian public.
A message of de-escalation or escalation?
Observers believe Rouhani’s statement carries a dual message: first, a categorical denial of the rumors,
and second, a reaffirmation of his commitment to political action within the established framework.
In doing so, he is attempting to preempt any interpretations that could be exploited politically or by the media.
The question remains: will the “coup rumor” end here, or will the coming days reveal a new chapter in the power struggle within Tehran?
