Erbil, Iraq – Germany announced the relocation of some of its troops stationed near the city of Erbil in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq to other locations outside the area. Berlin described the move as a “precautionary measure” amid escalating security tensions in the Middle East. It also cited growing concerns about a potential widening of the military escalation.
According to German military sources, the decision does not signify an end to the military mission or a complete withdrawal from Iraq. Rather, it aims to protect German forces and temporarily reposition them. This is a precautionary measure in anticipation of any security developments that could affect the safety of the soldiers or the progress of training operations. German forces are part of the international coalition.
For years, Germany has been involved in training and supporting Iraqi forces, particularly in the fight against ISIS. German army units are stationed at various locations, including Erbil, and provide technical support and military training to local forces.
Observers believe the redeployment reflects growing European concern about the potential for wider conflicts in the region, particularly given the escalating tensions between regional and international powers. The likelihood of attacks targeting military bases or foreign facilities has also increased.
In contrast, the German Ministry of Defense emphasized that coordination with allies is ongoing and that the decision is based on regular security assessments. It affirmed that the safety of its soldiers remains the “top priority,” while maintaining its commitment to supporting stability in Iraq.
This move comes at a time of heightened tension in the region, amid escalating military activity and international warnings about the risks of escalation. This is prompting several Western countries to review their troop deployments and take precautionary measures to mitigate potential risks.
