Brussels, Belgium – Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever accused US President Donald Trump of pursuing “anti-European Union” policies.
He asserted that Washington’s confrontational rhetoric and unilateral
actions directly undermine the foundations of the transatlantic partnership.
These policies, he said, are paving the way for a new phase of political and economic tension between the two sides.
Threat of imposing customs duties
He explained that Europe is facing increasing pressure on both trade and security fronts.
This comes amid escalating threats of tariffs and a reassessment of defense cooperation commitments.
He argued that this approach undermines the foundations of the international order based on partnership and balance.
Open conflict harms the economy
The Belgian Prime Minister stressed that the European Union must unify its position and defend its strategic interests.
He also emphasized the need to avoid being drawn into policies of dictation.
At the same time, channels of dialogue with the United States must be maintained to prevent relations
from deteriorating into open conflict that would harm the global economy and international stability.
