Beijing, China – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has made a striking shift in his country’s foreign policy tone toward Tehran. He announced a “united stance” with the administration of US President Donald Trump to prevent the Islamic Republic from acquiring a nuclear weapon. This comes amid an unprecedented US military buildup in the region.
Starmer: “The big challenge” and the common goal
In remarks made today, Thursday, during his official visit to China, Starmer affirmed that ensuring Iran does not acquire a military nuclear program is the “top priority” for the United Kingdom and its allies. Starmer stated unequivocally: “We are all in complete agreement on this, and we are working with our allies to achieve this goal. This is my main focus.”
Responding to journalists’ questions about the extent of his alignment with Trump’s “hardline” policies, the British Prime Minister emphasized that both sides are “in the same boat” regarding the ultimate objective. This objective is to neutralize the Iranian nuclear threat. He also noted that diplomatic efforts are still underway to prevent any nuclear escalation.
military buildup
This British political cover comes at a highly sensitive time, as American media reports (including CNN and Reuters) have revealed that the White House is seriously considering “wide-ranging” military options in response to the stalled preliminary negotiations.
On the ground, tensions reached a peak with the arrival of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group in the Middle East. The White House explicitly stated that “all options are on the table.” This was reinforced by the deployment of advanced F-15 and F-35 fighter jets.
Intelligence reports have also detected movements of military aircraft belonging to Washington’s allies, including Germany, at bases near Iran. This strengthens the hypothesis of a “coordinated international plan” to deal with any contingency should Tehran continue its current course.
