Washington, DC – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States has made numerous attempts over the past years to persuade Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to voluntarily relinquish power. These efforts are part of the US strategy to support a peaceful political transition in Venezuela and end the ongoing crisis in the country.
In a press statement, Rubio explained that Washington has employed a variety of political and diplomatic tools to pressure the Maduro regime. These tools have included imposing economic sanctions, working with regional and international partners, and supporting Venezuelan opposition forces. The aim of these measures is to compel the current leadership to accept a political settlement that allows the Venezuelan people to choose their leaders through free and fair elections.
The Secretary of State noted that these attempts have not yet yielded the desired results due to what he described as Maduro’s insistence on remaining in power. Maduro has also relied on limited support from external allies and internal security forces. He added that the United States continues to believe that the best solution to the Venezuelan crisis lies in a peaceful and orderly transition of power. This solution aims to spare the country further unrest and division.
Rubio emphasized that US policy toward Venezuela focuses on supporting the Venezuelan people in the face of economic and humanitarian deterioration. He noted that the sanctions target the ruling elite, not ordinary citizens, while maintaining humanitarian exceptions related to food, medicine, and energy.
In the same vein, the US Secretary of State stressed that Washington will continue to coordinate with Latin American countries and the European Union to exert collective pressure aimed at pushing the Venezuelan government to engage seriously in an inclusive political process. He also indicated his country’s readiness to ease some measures if Caracas demonstrates a genuine commitment to political reforms and respects the results of any future elections.
Venezuela has been experiencing a severe political and economic crisis for years. The conflict between the government and the opposition continues, with both sides exchanging accusations of electoral fraud and human rights violations. These developments come amidst repeated international attempts to find a way out of the crisis, without yet achieving a decisive breakthrough.
Rubio: The United States has tried many times to get Maduro to leave Venezuela voluntarily, but he is a stubborn person.
