Europe – The European Parliament condemned US President Donald Trump’s statements regarding his intention to annex Greenland, a territory belonging to Denmark, to the United States. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the European Parliament said it “strongly condemns the Trump administration’s statements on Greenland, which challenge international law, the principles of the UN Charter, and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of a NATO ally.”
The statement added that “such statements are unacceptable and have no place in relations between democratic partners.”
The European Parliament noted that “the Kingdom of Denmark, including Greenland, is a member of NATO and enjoys the full collective security guarantees of the Alliance,” adding that the Parliament “will continue to strengthen Europe’s defense capabilities and strive to ensure that EU member states uphold their NATO commitments through sustained defense investments and a robust presence in the Arctic region.”
It is worth noting that US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that Greenland should join the United States due to its importance to US national security, as he put it.
The Danish and Greenlandic authorities have rejected the US efforts to annex the island and have called for respect for Danish territorial integrity.
