New York, USA – Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations held the United States and Israel fully responsible for civilian casualties within Iranian territory. He asserted that the incident constituted a “flagrant violation of international law and the principles of the UN Charter.”
During an emergency session of the Security Council, the Iranian representative emphasized that his country “reserves its legitimate right to self-defense” under Article 51 of the UN Charter. He stated that attacks or acts of hostility targeting civilian areas “will not go unpunished.”
He added that targeting civilians and infrastructure constitutes a “dangerous escalation that threatens international peace and security.” He called on the international community to assume its responsibilities and end what he described as the “double standards” applied to Israeli attacks backed by the United States.
He also called on the Security Council to take urgent measures to hold those responsible in Iran accountable for the casualties. In addition, he urged action to prevent the recurrence of such violations. He warned that continued international silence could open the door to a new wave of tension and instability in the region.
This comes at a time when the region is witnessing a marked escalation in tensions. There are international fears of the conflict widening and its repercussions on regional and international security.
