Tehran, Iran – A recent technical modification to the appearance of the Iranian flag emoji in the open-source emoji library Twemoji has sparked widespread controversy. Twemoji is the platform used by X (formerly Twitter) to display emojis worldwide.
According to an update posted on Twemoji’s GitHub page, a pull request (Pull Request #1440) was approved. This replaced the current design of the official Iranian flag with a historical design known as the “Lion and Sun” flag. This design was used in Iran before 1979 during the Pahlavi dynasty. Observers consider this change, while seemingly technical, to carry sensitive political and symbolic implications.
A rising wave of popular protests
Nikita Bear, a senior product manager at X, confirmed in a post on his official account. He stated that the change was not an internal decision by the platform. Instead, it was a direct result of an update made by the Twemoji library. X uses this library to display its emojis. He noted that the platform is committed to keeping up with the technical updates of the open-source libraries it utilizes.
This controversy comes at a highly sensitive time, as Iran has been witnessing a rising wave of popular protests in several cities for weeks. This is fueled by a deteriorating political and economic situation. These protests have been accompanied by reports of a near-total internet blackout. There is also widespread disruption of telecommunications services. And These appear as an attempt to limit the organization of demonstrations and the dissemination of images of them abroad.
harsh statements against Tehran
These developments also coincide with ongoing strikes and the closure of markets and bazaars in several Iranian cities. This occurs amid escalating warnings from the United States against suppressing the protesters. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump continues to issue harsh statements against Tehran. He is hinting at the possibility of further escalatory measures.
Observers believe that the interplay between technical factors and the tense political context has intensified the reaction to the flag change issue. This has transformed it from a limited software update into a new symbol of political conflict and internal tensions in Iran.
