Washington, DC – Senior Advisor to the US President for Arab and African Affairs, Massad Boulos, reiterated on Saturday the United States’ call for both sides in the Sudanese conflict to commit to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. He emphasized that saving lives is a top priority for US diplomacy.
Diplomatic success in El Fasher
Paul announced in a post on his X platform that a UN assessment mission had arrived in El Fasher, Darfur. He described this as “tangible proof of the success of American diplomacy” in overcoming obstacles to humanitarian work. He expressed his hope that this assessment would be followed by regular aid convoys reaching the city, which had suffered a devastating siege.
The Trump administration’s vision for a solution
These moves follow up on what Paulus confirmed last month regarding the Trump administration’s work with regional partners to facilitate a “humanitarian truce.” He emphasized that the ultimate goal is:
To establish lasting peace and stability.
Enabling the Sudanese people to return to civilian rule within a unified Sudan.
The tragedy of Kordofan and the worsening crisis
These diplomatic efforts come at a time when serious violations continue to occur on the ground. Reports indicate that 31 people were killed or injured in an airstrike by the army targeting Christian civilians celebrating Christmas in the Kordofan region.
This incident further darkens the humanitarian situation in the country. Since the war began in April 2013, it has left tens of thousands dead and displaced nearly 12 million people. This comes amidst efforts led by the Quartet (the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt) to find a political solution to the crisis.
