Maputo, Mozambique – Mozambican President Daniel Chapecoè has granted a presidential pardon to 751 prisoners. The move has been described as aimed at promoting national reconciliation and easing pressure on the country’s overcrowded prisons.

The presidential palace said in an official statement that the pardon included prisoners convicted of various criminal offenses. The focus was on individuals who had served a significant portion of their sentences or who had demonstrated good behavior during their incarceration. The statement added that this measure falls within the government’s efforts to implement a restorative justice policy. It also aims to effectively reintegrate former prisoners into society.

Political analysts believe that President Chapeco’s move is also an attempt to bolster his public image, particularly in light of the economic and social challenges facing the country, including poverty and widespread youth unemployment.

Government officials confirmed that the amnesty will not include criminals involved in serious violence or terrorism. This decision aims to strike a balance between achieving justice and protecting society.

For years, Mozambique has been experiencing increasing pressure on its prisons due to overcrowding. This has prompted authorities to seek solutions aimed at alleviating the burden and improving prison management, while maintaining public security.
