Brussels, Belgium – The European Union expressed its full solidarity with Afghan displaced on the occasion of International Migrants Day,
affirming its commitment to strengthening support for returnees
and internally displaced persons, with top priority given to the health, education and livelihoods sectors.
In this regard, the Union’s office in Afghanistan explained via the “X” platform that this support
This comes through joint programs with the United Nations to ensure
the dignified reintegration of returnees into their communities.
Focus on the most vulnerable groups
For her part, Veronica Boskovic-Bohar, acting head of the EU delegation, stressed
This is based on the fact that children and internally displaced persons are
the ones most in need of additional support under the current circumstances.
Accordingly, the union works in coordination with its field partners to implement training programs.
It aims to achieve the social and economic integration of these individuals,
thereby contributing to alleviating the severity of the complex humanitarian crisis.
Shocking figures and logistical challenges
In a related context, the United Nations Development Programme revealed alarming figures in a recent report;
More than 2.3 million Afghans were deported from Iran and Pakistan in 2025 alone.
As a result of this massive influx, this forced return exacerbated
the fragility of basic service systems within the country.
Especially since the Afghan infrastructure already suffers from severe weakness and limited institutional capabilities.
Deportation campaigns and escalating risks
Moreover, this year’s International Migrants Day comes amid difficult security conditions,
Afghans in neighboring countries face increasing risks of arrest and immediate deportation.
Consequently, authorities in neighboring countries have intensified arrest campaigns this year.
This has placed additional pressure on international organizations to try
to provide legal and humanitarian protection for these migrants.
Ongoing international commitment
In conclusion, the European Union renewed its commitment to continue providing humanitarian
and development support to the Afghan people, and to working closely with international partners.
This is aimed at mitigating the repercussions of the escalating migration crisis
and ensuring the protection of the most vulnerable groups.
This promotes social stability in an environment that lacks the most basic elements of economic security.
