Washington, DC – American academic and political analyst Walid Phares warned of the rise of clandestine movements in Europe. He pointed to the spread of what he termed “urban jihad,” noting that these grassroots phenomena are gradually taking shape in Western cities and towns. These phenomena could erupt in the near future if authorities do not intervene effectively.
Fares said via his X account: “Hidden popular currents are forming in the West, heating up slowly, starting to boil over, and igniting sparks at their edges. In the end, they will explode.”
He added that this urban jihadism is spreading from Sweden to Ireland, and from Manhattan to Berkeley. He noted that the waves of popular resistance to this violence lack leadership, a public discourse, and a strategic vision. This is happening despite being driven by legitimate fear and anger.
Fares explained that these phenomena are not new; the events began more than twenty years ago. When a young girl in Paris said in 2005, “Mom, I’m scared,” cars were burning in what he described as a “global uprising.” He added that the generation that was young then is now in their mid-twenties. And the risks continue to escalate in other cities like Sydney.
The American analyst warned that major governments need to stop these processes before urban disasters spread throughout the free world. He emphasized that these hidden currents are multiplying four times faster than ever before.
