Paris, France – Laurent Wauquiez, head of the Republican Right group in the French parliament, announced his intention to introduce legislative initiatives aimed at designating the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization at the European level. Wauquiez plans to submit this draft resolution in January. It will be presented within his party’s parliamentary allotted time on January 22, according to the French news network CNews.

Highlights
  • Explanatory note: Mental and social violence
  • The Muslim Brotherhood is under international scrutiny.

Explanatory note: Mental and social violence

The initiative was based on a report issued by the French Interior Ministry last May concerning the group. In the explanatory memorandum to the bill, Republican MP Eric Bouguier noted that the group, “although it does not directly claim responsibility for terrorist acts, contributes to shaping the mental and social fabric of societies,” referring to “a form of violence against the state that can be likened to state terrorism.”

The Muslim Brotherhood is under international scrutiny.

This initiative comes amid increasing scrutiny of the Muslim Brotherhood in Europe, where it remains banned only in Austria since July 2021.

In the United States, Texas designated the group a “terrorist organization” last November, a decision later extended to Florida. President Donald Trump also signed an executive order on November 24th, initiating a process to designate the group’s branches in certain countries as “foreign terrorist organizations.”
