Abuja, Nigeria – Nigerian authorities announced on Tuesday that they have granted political asylum to the opposition candidate in Guinea-Bissau’s presidential election. This move has attracted attention in regional political circles, particularly given the ongoing tensions in the West African nation.
The Nigerian presidency said in a brief statement that the decision was made “for humanitarian reasons.” It affirmed that the Abuja government seeks to “maintain regional stability and promote peaceful solutions to political disputes.” Authorities did not disclose the nominee’s name for security reasons. Diplomatic sources indicated that he left the country days earlier following “signs of threats to his safety.”
The granting of asylum comes at a time of political tension in Guinea-Bissau. There are widespread disagreements between the government and the opposition over the results of the recent elections, amid international calls for calm and respect for constitutional procedures.
Nigeria confirmed that the opposition candidate would receive “full protection” within its territory until conditions allow for his return, stressing that a political solution “is the only way to guarantee stability in Guinea-Bissau and the entire region.”
Nigeria plays a pivotal role in West Africa. It often intervenes as a mediator in political conflicts between neighboring countries, making its latest decision a further step in what it considers its “regional responsibility.”
