Seoul, South Korea – The South Korean presidential office announced Sunday that President Lee Jae-myung will deliver a special address this week to commemorate the one-year anniversary of former President Yoon Seok-yeol’s failed attempt to impose martial law, an event that rocked the country’s political landscape last year.
Presidential Secretary for Communications and Public Relations Lee Kyu-yeon stated that President Lee will hold a press conference following his speech. Approximately 80 foreign journalists are expected to attend. The conference will be held under the theme “Restoring Democracy in South Korea.”
The president is expected to focus at this conference on reviewing his government’s efforts to promote transparency and reform institutions in the wake of the recent political crisis.
The secretary added that the president will also host an official luncheon bringing together the heads of the five branches of government. Attendees will include Woo Won-shik, Speaker of the National Assembly; Cho Hee-dae, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court; Kim Sang-hwan, President of the Constitutional Court; Kim Min-seok, Prime Minister; and Noh Tae-ak, Chairman of the National Election Commission.
The event is expected to feature extensive discussions on the course of political and democratic reforms in the country, as well as the next steps to strengthen the rule of law and prevent future attempts to undermine the constitutional order.
