Dubai, United Arab Emirates – Iran has recalled its ambassadors to Germany, France and the United Kingdom for consultations.
This is in protest against these countries launching the “trigger mechanism” path.
This move is the first practical move hours before UN sanctions take effect, on Saturday evening.
Tehran described the European Troika’s activation of the trigger mechanism as an “irresponsible and unjust” decision.
Failure of Russian-Chinese efforts
The move came after a Russian-Chinese effort to postpone the re-imposition of international sanctions on Iran failed. This happened on Friday in the 15-member UN Security Council.
This came after only four countries voted in favor of the draft resolution. It paved the way for the re-imposition of sanctions.
The move also came as Tehran threatened to suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency. They concluded a new cooperation agreement in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on September 9.
What is a last minute show?
Over the past few days, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi held intensive talks with the Europeans. This occurred while he was in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly meetings.
Especially with the French side, it did not lead to a result. European diplomats described what was presented on the table by Iran as an unserious offer.
In turn, Iranian President Masoud Bezeshkian recently admitted that consultations with the Europeans “did not go as expected”.
French President Emmanuel Macon announced, after negotiations that lasted several days, that it was still “possible” to spare Iran from reactivating international sanctions.
Provided that it meets the legitimate conditions of the European Troika.
That is, agreeing to allow International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors to enter all Iranian nuclear facilities.
As well as responding to concerns about its stockpile of enriched uranium and engaging in talks with the United States.
But Iran confirmed, on Friday, through Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, that it would not submit to pressure.
This indicates that entering the era of sanctions is just around the corner.
On Saturday evening, UN sanctions on Iran will return. They were previously suspended under the nuclear agreement signed in 2015.
