Nyon, Switzerland – UEFA has issued an official statement regarding the racist incident involving Real Madrid’s Brazilian player Vinicius Junior. The incident occurred during his team’s match against Benfica in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 playoff.
The match, which took place on Tuesday evening and ended in a 1-0 victory for Real Madrid, was marred by allegations that Vinicius was subjected to racist chants from some Benfica fans. Additionally, a Benfica player was accused of directing racist abuse at him during the game.
The incident occurred after Vinicius scored the only goal of the match in the 50th minute, during the encounter held at the “Da Luz” stadium.
UEFA explained in its statement: “Official reports for all of yesterday’s matches are currently being reviewed. Should any violations be proven, the necessary measures will be taken in accordance with the approved disciplinary regulations”.
The statement added: “If disciplinary proceedings are opened or sanctions are imposed, these will be announced via UEFA’s official website.” It also confirmed that “there is no further information at this stage”.
