Damascus, Syria – Syrian Attorney General Judge Hassan al-Turbah announced the referral of four prominent officials from the era of former President Bashar al-Assad, including former Mufti Ahmed Badr al-Din Hassoun, to the investigating judge, in order to “begin investigating them” for committing crimes against the people of Syria.

The Syrian Ministry of Justice published a statement on the X website, which read: “This step comes within the framework of ongoing efforts to prosecute the perpetrators of crimes against the Syrian people, and based on the implementation of transitional justice. After the Ministry of Interior referred a number of files of those accused of committing these violations, we studied the seizure and the documents submitted, and based on that, a public rights lawsuit was filed.”

The four officials are: Atef Naguib, Ahmed Badr El-Din Hassoun, Muhammad Al-Shaar, and Ibrahim Al-Hawija.

The Public Prosecutor called on all those affected and their families, or those who have testimonies or information about these violations, to provide what they have to include them in the investigation file.

He also called on relevant human rights and humanitarian organizations to submit their “files and documents that can contribute to revealing the truth”.
