Brussels, Belgium – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pledged to escalate pressure on Russia, including imposing new sanctions, following a foiled drone attack on Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany. European officials characterized the incident as reflecting increasing “recklessness” by Moscow aimed at European infrastructure and security.

Explosive Drone and NATO Logistics Hub

Maintenance personnel at Leipzig/Halle Airport discovered a drone laden with explosives and a detonation device last month, triggering high security alerts across Germany and Europe. The airport serves as a critical commercial logistics hub in eastern Germany and plays a pivotal role in NATO military transport operations, while also hosting Ukraine’s fleet of heavy Antonov An-124 cargo aircraft.

European authorities emphasized that any sabotage activities targeting vital transportation facilities directly impact supply chains and logistics support vital to Ukraine and allied defense.

Looming New Sanctions and Security Concerns

Ultimately, Von der Leyen’s statements followed a high-level meeting in Brussels with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, underscoring close coordination between the EU and the alliance against potential sabotage. European leaders remain deeply concerned over escalating hybrid threats against critical infrastructure, accelerating plans for fresh punitive sanctions against Moscow.
