Kiev, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a presidential decree relieving his country’s ambassador to the United States, Olga Stefanyshina, from her duties. This step comes as part of a series of changes witnessed by state institutions and the Ukrainian diplomatic corps during the recent period.
The presidential decree did not explain the direct reasons behind the decision. Nevertheless, the move comes at a time when Kiev is seeking to strengthen its relations with Washington. Kiev also aims to obtain more military support. Ukraine specifically requests air defense systems, in order to confront the ongoing Russian escalation.
Olga Stefanishina confirmed that her departure was for personal reasons. She noted that she was proud of her time representing Ukraine in Washington, D.C. Furthermore, she considered strengthening cooperation with the United States and maintaining the level of political and military support for her country among her most significant achievements.
The position of Ukrainian ambassador to the United States is one of the most important diplomatic posts in Kyiv, given Washington’s pivotal role in supporting Ukraine since the outbreak of the war with Russia. Observers expect Zelensky to announce the name of the new ambassador in the coming days. This comes as part of a broader diplomatic reshuffle. The reshuffle aims at improving the performance of Ukrainian missions abroad.
