Berlin, Germany – Union Berlin has written a new chapter in football history. This comes after the club announced the appointment of Marie-Louise Etta as head coach of the first team. She thus becomes the first woman to manage a team in the German Bundesliga.
This move is an unprecedented achievement, as Ita becomes the first female coach to lead a men’s team in one of Europe’s top five leagues. This development reflects a remarkable evolution in modern football.
The club’s management made the decision after dismissing coach Steffen Baumgart and his staff. This came after a 3-1 defeat to Heidenheim, a result that further complicated the team’s position in the league standings.
Etta was coaching the under-19 team at Union Berlin. She had previously agreed to take over the women’s team starting next season. She was then entrusted with this challenging task with the first team.
In her first statement, Eta expressed her delight at the club’s confidence in her. She acknowledged that staying in the Bundesliga remains a tough challenge given the close points standings. However, she also emphasized the team’s ability to unite and achieve the necessary results in the upcoming period.
