Rome, Italy – Italian authorities have taken a new step towards tightening control over social media platforms. This was done by imposing additional restrictions on Instagram. These restrictions aim to protect teenagers from exposure to inappropriate or harmful content.
Under the new measures, stricter default settings will be activated on the accounts of users under 18. These measures include reducing the visibility of sensitive content and blocking access to material that could negatively affect mental health or behavior.
The new rules also restrict teenagers’ interaction with suspicious accounts or those that publish inappropriate content. In addition, an age rating system, similar to film ratings, has been introduced. This system allows for greater parental control over their children’s online activity.
This move comes amid growing concern in Europe about the impact of social media on young people, particularly with the proliferation of violent content and risky behavior. This concern has prompted several countries to consider or implement similar restrictions to protect minors.
Through these policies, Italy seeks to promote what is known as “digital safety.” This comes at a time when calls are growing within the European Union for stricter legislation to regulate the use of digital platforms by children and teenagers.
