Washington, DC – In a move that reflects his penchant for grand architectural projects, US President Donald Trump announced that his administration has officially submitted final plans for a “Triumphal Arch” in the Washington, DC area. Trump described the arch as “the greatest and most beautiful triumphal arch in the world.”
Architectural details that defy records
Through his platform Truth Social, Trump confirmed that he had submitted the formal proposal to the prestigious Fine Arts Commission. He indicated that the project would be a historic addition that generations of Americans would enjoy for decades to come.
According to leaked plans, the arch would reach a height of 76.2 meters, making it the tallest of its kind in the world. This would surpass Mexico City’s Revolution Monument by 9 meters and push the Victory Arch in Pyongyang to third place.
The designs reveal a majestic structure more than twice the height of the Lincoln Memorial. The arch will be gilded and clearly visible from Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
The design also features a gilded statue of a “Winged Lady Liberty” flanked by two eagles on the roof. The phrases “One Nation Under God” and “Liberty and Justice for All” are inscribed on either side, in a lavish imitation of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. However, the design adheres to contemporary American standards.
The timing of the celebration and the controversy surrounding costs
Trump, a veteran real estate developer, explained that the project commemorates the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States and its declaration of independence in 1776. The arch is planned as a strategic traffic circle at the edge of the District of Columbia. It will also connect the Arlington Memorial Bridge to the Lincoln Memorial.
Despite the enthusiasm shown by the president’s supporters for the project as a symbol of “American greatness,” critics and politicians have warned of the exorbitant costs that construction and gilded decorations would entail.
The proposed location has also raised concerns about its visual impact on existing historical monuments. Some argue that the arch’s immense size could overshadow the symbolism of the nearby Lincoln Memorial.
Nevertheless, the White House insists that the project will be funded as part of major national celebrations and will thus serve as a monument embodying American strength and unity in its third century.
