Baghdad, Iraq – The Iraqi parliament elected Nizar Amidi as the new president of Iraq during a session held today after a quorum was reached. This step ends a political deadlock that had lasted for months.
Objections of political forces
The Iraqi parliament held a session today dedicated to electing a new president, after achieving a quorum with 223 members present. The session took place amidst objections from some Kurdish political forces, particularly the Kurdistan Democratic Party, due to ongoing disagreements over a consensus candidate.
Intense Kurdish rivalry
The presidential race was contested by Fuad Hussein, the Kurdistan Democratic Party candidate, and Nizar Amidi, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan candidate. This occurred amidst a clear division between the two parties.
Ongoing political crisis
This session comes after repeated postponements, influenced by regional tensions and security developments. It is worth noting that Iraq has exceeded the constitutional deadline by approximately 70 days, and 148 days have passed without the formation of a new government. This comes amidst political efforts to break the deadlock and restore the constitutional process.
