Beirut, Lebanon – The Lebanese Ministry of Health announced that Israeli airstrikes targeting Lebanon yesterday resulted in the deaths of 303 people and injuries to 1,150 others, in a preliminary count. This comes amid continued bombardment that threatens the country’s stability and exacerbates regional tensions.
Human and field damage
The ministry explained that the airstrikes targeted populated areas in Beirut’s southern suburbs and southern Lebanon, causing widespread destruction to homes and public facilities. Rescue teams confirmed that their work to recover victims and the injured is ongoing. However, access to some sites remains extremely difficult due to the extensive damage.
Official and political responses
The Lebanese government called on the international community to pressure Israel to halt its bombing campaign. It condemned the attacks as a “flagrant violation of international law.” A national day of mourning was also declared in solidarity with the victims. Meanwhile, several European countries stressed the need to include Lebanon in any existing ceasefire agreements with Iran.
Impact of the conflict on the region
The Israeli bombing has raised fears of a new escalation in the region, especially given Hezbollah’s continued military activities inside Lebanon and Israel’s responses to any attacks. The conflict is also causing concern about trade and energy flows in the Middle East. Furthermore, there are indications of rising global oil and fuel prices due to the ongoing tensions.
