Jerusalem, Israel – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has requested a postponement of his testimony in his ongoing corruption trial. This comes just days before the trial is scheduled to resume. He justified his request by citing rapidly evolving security developments in the region.
Security reasons behind the request for postponement
The defense team explained in a memorandum submitted to the court that Netanyahu would be unable to appear in court for at least the next two weeks. This was due to security and diplomatic reasons, which they described as confidential, stemming from recent events in Israel and the Middle East. They indicated that details of these reasons were submitted to the court in a sealed envelope. The court will rule on the request after receiving a response from the prosecution.
The trial is scheduled to resume in the coming days, following its suspension due to the state of emergency related to the war with Iran. This state of emergency recently ended with the declaration of a temporary ceasefire. The judicial authorities decided to resume court operations after the security threat subsided.
Multiple accusations and persistent denials
Netanyahu faces three major indictments, including charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. The charges involve accepting lavish gifts from businessmen in exchange for political favors, as well as accusations of colluding with media outlets for favorable coverage. Netanyahu is the first sitting Israeli prime minister to stand trial. He continues to deny all charges, describing the trial as politically motivated.
These developments come amid mounting political pressure on the government. The case is also expected to influence the upcoming elections, at a time when the repercussions of the recent war are still being felt in Israel.
