Bamako, Mali – The Malian government has announced the withdrawal of its recognition of the so-called “Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.” It also expressed its explicit support for the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco as a solution to the Western Sahara conflict. This move represents a significant shift in Mali’s position and strengthens Rabat’s diplomatic efforts.
Growing support for the Moroccan position
The announcement came in an official statement read by the Malian Foreign Minister following talks with his Moroccan counterpart.
He affirmed that the decision followed a comprehensive assessment of the conflict’s repercussions on regional security and stability.
He added that his country considers autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty the most realistic and credible option for resolving the issue.
The statement clarified that Mali, with this decision, joins the countries supporting the autonomy proposal.
It considers it the only serious and practical basis for a solution.
It indicated that this aligns with the efforts of the United Nations
and relevant Security Council resolutions.
It also affirmed its support for the UN process, including the efforts
of the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General.
Furthermore, it commended the Security Council resolutions,
particularly Resolution 2025, which called for the resumption of negotiations.
Escalating diplomatic context
This shift comes in the context of Morocco’s cumulative diplomatic successes in recent years. Morocco has managed to reshape the positions of several countries regarding the Western Sahara issue.
It achieved this by adopting an approach that combines international legitimacy with development and regional stability.
Observers believe the decision reflects a growing international conviction in the viability of the autonomy proposal as a practical and applicable solution.
Mali expressed its appreciation for its relations with Morocco. It also praised Rabat’s support in the areas of development and stability,
describing the relationship as a developmental and humanitarian vision that strengthens cooperation between the two countries.
Mali confirmed that its new position will be communicated to regional and international organizations and the diplomatic corps. This step reflects a clear shift in its stance on this issue.
