Beirut, Lebanon – Israel launched intensive airstrikes on several areas in Lebanon, killing more than 250 people. This comes amid continued tensions following the announcement of a ceasefire between the United States and Iran.
Conflict and truce
Israel confirmed that the ceasefire agreement announced by Washington does not include Lebanon. Iran, on the other hand, stressed the necessity of including Lebanon in any agreement. It also warned that it would not proceed with the agreement if the attacks continued. Pakistan, acting as a mediator, called for expanding the truce to include Lebanon and Yemen. Preparations also began for the first direct talks between the American and Iranian delegations in Islamabad.
The effects of the bombing on civilians
Israel expanded its evacuation orders to include Beirut’s southern suburbs, areas near Beirut Airport, and the Camille Chamoun Stadium. Meanwhile, Lebanese authorities declared a national day of mourning. Rescue teams continued searching for the wounded and recovering bodies throughout the night. The toll was described as a “massacre” due to the targeting of populated areas without prior warning.
Impact of the fighting on the global economy
The Iranian blockade of the Strait of Hormuz remained in place, halting shipping and disrupting global oil supplies. Oil and fuel prices soared to record highs, with gasoline in the United States reaching $5.69 per gallon. Ongoing tensions in Lebanon and Iran have fueled fears of a wider conflict and its impact on global energy markets.
Military and political responses
Hezbollah announced it had carried out dozens of military operations inside Lebanese territory, targeting Israeli vehicles and areas in northern Israel. An Israeli official indicated that the bombardment would continue, albeit at a reduced intensity during the negotiations. He also confirmed that warplanes would continue targeting Hezbollah positions. European countries, including Britain and France, called for Lebanon to be included in the ceasefire. Furthermore, these countries condemned Israeli attacks on civilians.
