Madrid, Spain – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called on the European Union to suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement in response to Israeli airstrikes and attacks on Lebanon, which he described as a flagrant violation of international law and the targeting of civilians.
Sánchez stressed that the continued Israeli attacks on Lebanon constitute an unacceptable disregard for human life and international law, emphasizing the need for the EU to take immediate action, including suspending the agreement with Israel. He also called for Lebanon to be included in the recent ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, stressing the need for the international community to condemn these violations and ensure that those responsible do not escape punishment.
He added that the inadequate response to the escalation in Lebanon underscores the need for a diplomatic and moral shift in the EU’s policies toward the conflict in the Middle East, noting the importance of swift action to protect civilians and prevent further military escalation.
This call comes amid widespread international disagreement regarding the inclusion of Lebanon in current ceasefire agreements, following a wave of military escalation that, according to Lebanese authorities, has resulted in hundreds of deaths and injuries.
