Manama, Bahrain – The Public Prosecution in Bahrain ordered the detention of several suspects pending investigation after their arrest on charges of espionage for Iranian intelligence agencies and the Revolutionary Guard, in a case related to threatening national security.
The head of the Terrorism Crimes Prosecution explained, in a statement carried by the Bahrain News Agency, that the suspects were arrested based on information and investigations that revealed their connection to Iranian intelligence entities. He also confirmed that they had received instructions related to monitoring vital sites within the country.
Sensitive sites…and espionage missions
The head of the Terrorism Crimes Prosecution in Bahrain indicated that the defendants were tasked with gathering detailed information about vital installations and sending it to their contacts with whom they were communicating, with the aim of targeting them. They were also instructed to document the aftermath of any potential attacks by photographing the sites of destruction and sabotage.
Initial investigations confirmed that the defendants had indeed carried out some of the tasks assigned to them. These tasks included surveillance and documentation. Consequently, this posed a direct threat to the security and safety of vital installations in the country.
Investigations continue… and the circumstances are revealed
The Public Prosecution in Bahrain added that it has begun investigating the accused, interrogating them and issuing a decision to detain them pending trial. Investigations are ongoing to uncover all the circumstances of the case and identify any other parties involved.
Bahraini authorities emphasized their continued efforts to counter any attempts targeting state security. They also affirmed that the necessary legal measures will be taken against anyone proven to be involved in such cases.
