New York, United States — The UN Security Council reaffirmed its firm commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council during a special session held at the headquarters of the United Nations.
Recognition of GCC role
The statement was issued following a session chaired by Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, where council members praised the GCC’s active contributions to regional and international peace and stability.
They highlighted the council’s role in:
- Mediation and preventive diplomacy
- Supporting UN peacekeeping operations
- Providing financial and technical assistance
- Participating in humanitarian initiatives led by the United Nations
Strengthening partnership with the United Nations
The UN Security Council stressed the importance of advancing institutional cooperation with the Gulf Cooperation Council through:
- Expanding regular dialogue
- Enhancing coordination mechanisms
- Increasing information sharing
The council also called on the United Nations Secretary-General to include practical recommendations in an upcoming report to further strengthen this partnership, particularly in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, counterterrorism, and humanitarian response.
Addressing shared challenges
The statement underscored the need to intensify joint efforts to address key global and regional challenges, including:
- Maritime security
- Food and water security
- Counterterrorism
- Humanitarian crises
It also emphasized the importance of:
- Promoting the role of women and youth in peace and security efforts
- Strengthening the role of regional organizations in addressing emerging challenges
