Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates — Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashimy participated in a virtual ministerial meeting on maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, hosted by the United Kingdom.
Warning over serious maritime threats
Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashimy stated that Iranian attacks pose a direct threat to freedom of navigation and global energy security, noting that the United Arab Emirates has faced over 2,500 missile and drone attacks targeting civilian infrastructure since February 28.
Strategic waterway under pressure
She highlighted that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz could severely impact global markets, as the strait carries:
- 20% of global oil
- 25% of natural gas production
- 70% of petrochemicals
- 33% of global fertilizer exports
Support for international efforts
The UAE reaffirmed its support for international initiatives aimed at safeguarding maritime security and ensuring safe passage for commercial vessels, stressing the need for adherence to international law.
