Moscow, Russia – The Kremlin announced that halting what it called the “hot phase” of the military operation in Ukraine requires the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the Donbas region. This stance reflects Moscow’s adherence to its fundamental conditions for ending the escalation on the ground.
Taking concrete steps
The Russian presidential spokesperson explained that achieving a genuine de-escalation on the ground would be impossible without “concrete steps” from Ukraine. Foremost among these steps is the withdrawal of its forces from areas that Moscow considers part of its strategic sphere of influence.
He indicated that the current military operations are being conducted within the framework of “protecting Russian national security.” He also affirmed that his country remains open to political solutions, but stipulates the need for clear guarantees regarding security arrangements in the region.
Unacceptable concession
Ukraine, for its part, categorically rejects these proposals, reaffirming its commitment to its territorial integrity. It considers any withdrawal from Donbas an “unacceptable concession” that infringes upon its national sovereignty.
Observers believe that each side’s adherence to its position complicates the chances of reaching a settlement soon. This is exacerbated by the continued military operations and exchange of accusations, leaving the situation open to further escalation in the coming period.
These statements come at a time of increasing international pressure to revive the negotiation process. Amidst this, warnings are being issued about the worsening humanitarian and security consequences of the ongoing conflict.
