Cairo, Egypt – Informed sources revealed that Hamas has told mediators it will not enter into discussions regarding disarmament before receiving clear guarantees of a complete Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.
This is in accordance with the proposed initiatives to solidify the ceasefire.
Hamas conditions for negotiations
Sources, including Egyptian and Palestinian officials, explained that a Hamas delegation discussed proposals
related to a disarmament plan in Cairo with mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey.
These mediators emphasized the necessity of implementing all ceasefire provisions,
halting military violations, and ensuring a complete Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.
Furthermore, Hamas requested clarification regarding what it described as the ongoing expansion of Israeli-controlled areas within Gaza.
It stressed that these issues were prerequisites for engaging in any arrangements concerning its weapons.
Israel insists on disarmament
In contrast, Israel insists that any withdrawal from the Gaza Strip will not take place before Hamas is completely disarmed.
This is the main point of contention hindering progress in the ongoing talks.
Hamas accuses Israel of violating the ceasefire agreement by carrying out repeated strikes inside the Strip.
Tel Aviv, for its part, says its operations are aimed at thwarting imminent attacks.
Talks falter and prospects for a solution
Sources close to the negotiations indicated that Hamas’s response reduces the chances of rapid progress on the disarmament issue.
At the same time, consultations are expected to continue in the coming period.
Additionally, scenarios are being discussed for the continuation of reconstruction efforts
in some areas under Israeli control, despite the stalled comprehensive agreement.
This comes amid warnings that the ongoing disagreements could prolong the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
